Tony Bennett was getting ready for a show in San Francisco in 1961 when his piano player pulled out the sheet music for a tune that two hopeful songwriters had given to him. Reading from it, Mr. Bennett started singing, “The loveliness of Paris seems somehow sadly gray. / The glory that was Rome is of another day.” The bartender in the rehearsal space called him over and said, “If you guys record that song, I’ll buy the first copy.”
